How to Fill In Grey Eyebrows (No Dye Required)

If your brows have started going silver, most of the advice out there assumes you want the grey gone. We make a grey eyebrow pencil and a grey brow gel on purpose, so you can probably guess where we stand. Grey brows aren't a problem to fix. They're a colour to work with, and once you've got the right one in hand, filling them in takes about two minutes. Which, realistically, is what most of us have.

First, one decision: keep the silver or warm it up

You can keep them silver. Groomed, shaped, held in place, and unmistakably grey. If your hair has gone silver too, this usually looks fantastic, because everything matches the way it's supposed to.

Or you can warm them up a touch. Not back to the brown of twenty years ago, just a nudge toward taupe or a soft brown if that feels more like you.

Both work. The point is choosing, not covering.

How to fill in grey eyebrows with a pencil

Here's the good news: it's the same brow routine you already know. The only thing that's changed is which colour works.

1. Start with a cool-toned pencil. Grey hair is cool-toned, so the pencil needs to be too. Warm brown next to silver reads orange and harsh, which is why your old pencil stopped looking right. Our Dot to Dot pencil in Grey was made for exactly this, with an angled tip that mimics real hair.
2. Use light strokes, in the direction the hair grows. Short flicks, not one long line.
3. Start at the arch, not the inner corner. Wherever you start, that's where most of the pigment lands, and the arch carries it better. The inner corner wants the least colour, so it goes last.
4. Build slowly. You can always add more. Going backwards is harder.
5. Brush through to finish. The spoolie softens everything into place, and any spot that looks a bit keen gets blended on the way through.

That's it. Thirty seconds a brow once you've done it a few times.

Setting them so they stay

Can you tint or dye grey eyebrows?

You can, and if you love a salon tint, go for it.

Grey hair can take tint unevenly, so results vary from brow to brow, and once it's done, it's done until it grows out. Makeup gives you the same effect with day-by-day control. Silver on the weekend, warmed up for work, washed off at night. If you change your mind, you wash it off. No six-week wait.

Why makeup beats plucking

It's tempting to just pull the silver ones out. We'd suggest you don't.

Brows naturally thin as we get older, and regrowth slows down, so every hair you have is doing a job. Pluck a grey one and you're not trading it for a brown one, you're trading it for a gap. Keep the hair. Change the colour, or don't. Either way your brows stay full, which is the thing that actually matters.
